WHAT is dialectical behavior therapy?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT is now used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

DBT is a comprehensive treatment approach that combines individual therapy, group therapy, skills training, and phone coaching to help individuals develop skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. The therapy is based on the concept of dialectics, which is the idea that two seemingly contradictory ideas can both be true at the same time. In DBT, this means that the therapist works with the individual to find a balance between acceptance and change.

The individual therapy component of DBT typically involves weekly sessions with a trained therapist who helps the individual to identify negative thought patterns and behaviors and develop strategies for managing their emotions and behaviors. Group therapy sessions may also be used to provide additional support and help individuals practice their skills in a supportive environment. Skills training sessions focus on teaching specific skills related to emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Phone coaching may also be provided to individuals in between sessions to help them manage crises and practice their skills in real-world situations.

DBT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions, particularly those involving difficulties with emotion regulation and impulse control. It is a structured and comprehensive approach to treatment that provides individuals with the skills and strategies they need to manage their emotions, improve their relationships, and lead a more fulfilling life.

Clear Mind Counseling therapists are experts in the use of dialectical behavior therapy.
