WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationship between an individual's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented therapy that is based on the idea that negative patterns of thinking and behavior can contribute to the development and maintenance of mental health disorders.

In CBT, the therapist works with the individual to identify negative thought patterns and behaviors that may be contributing to their symptoms. Through a variety of techniques and strategies, the therapist helps the individual to challenge and change these patterns in order to improve their mood, reduce anxiety, and manage their symptoms.

CBT is used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and others. CBT is often used in combination with other treatments, such as medication, and can be done in individual or group settings.

Some common techniques used in CBT include:

  • Cognitive restructuring: The therapist helps the individual to identify negative thought patterns and challenge them by looking for evidence to support or refute these thoughts.

  • Exposure therapy: The individual is gradually exposed to the situation or object that causes anxiety or fear, in a safe and controlled environment.

  • Behavioral activation: The therapist helps the individual to identify and engage in activities that they find enjoyable and rewarding, in order to improve their mood.

  • Relaxation techniques: The therapist teaches the individual relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation, to help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

CBT is a highly effective form of psychotherapy that has been extensively researched and validated for the treatment of a variety of mental health conditions.
