WHAT IS Anxiety?
Anxiety is a normal human emotion that is experienced by everyone from time to time. It is a feeling of uneasiness, worry, or fear in response to a perceived threat or danger, whether real or imagined. Anxiety can be a helpful emotion, as it can motivate individuals to take action in response to a threat. However, when anxiety becomes excessive or chronic, it can interfere with daily activities, relationships, and overall quality of life.
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive and persistent feelings of anxiety and fear. These disorders can include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and others. Individuals with anxiety disorders may experience symptoms such as:
Excessive worry or fear
Restlessness or feeling on edge
Fatigue
Difficulty concentrating
Muscle tension or aches
Irritability
Sleep disturbances
Anxiety disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, life experiences, and environmental factors. Treatment for anxiety disorders typically involves psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a common form of psychotherapy used to treat anxiety disorders. Medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are also commonly prescribed to help manage symptoms of anxiety. With proper treatment, individuals with anxiety disorders can learn to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
