WHAT IS Cognitive processing therapy (CPT)?
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a type of evidence-based psychotherapy that is designed to help individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) better understand and cope with the effects of their trauma. CPT is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that involves exploring and addressing negative beliefs and thought patterns related to the traumatic event.
The goal of CPT is to help individuals identify and challenge their negative beliefs about themselves and the world that have developed as a result of the trauma. Through the therapy process, individuals learn how to identify and modify unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, and develop more adaptive ways of coping with their experiences.
CPT typically involves 12 weekly sessions, during which individuals work with a trained therapist to address four main components of the therapy:
Education: Individuals learn about the symptoms of PTSD and how trauma can impact the brain and body.
Skill-building: Individuals learn specific coping skills to help manage distressing symptoms and develop strategies for managing negative thoughts and beliefs.
Identifying stuck points: Individuals work with their therapist to identify negative beliefs or thought patterns that are causing them distress.
Challenging negative beliefs: Individuals learn to challenge and modify negative beliefs about themselves and the world, replacing them with more adaptive and positive beliefs.
CPT has been shown to be an effective treatment for PTSD, with research demonstrating that it can lead to significant improvements in symptoms and overall quality of life for individuals with PTSD.
